Polymer Clay Earrings

Polymer Clay Earrings

Polymer clay is a pliable and easy to use modelling clay which hardens after being heated in an oven. It is easily found at craft or art stores and comes in a wide variety of colours, once baked you can also apply a glaze to your finished pretties.

Hand making original jewellery out of polymer clay is easy and fun, a perfect project for a rainy day inside with a couple of pals. These little beauties are fantastic as gifts or as a little treat to yourself.

Enjoy this easy DIY and get crafty with it.

What you will need:

  • A few different colours Polymer Clay – I used Sculpey
  • Modelling tools – you can buy these specifically for purpose or use objects from your home such as a craft knife or skewers – what ever works for you.
  • Baking tray lined with baking paper
  • Paintbrush
  • Polymer glaze
  • Earring hooks and joining rings

Step 1

Prepare a clean work space and gather your tools to work with

Step 2

Start moulding your polymer clay!

Get creative, mix different coloured clay together to create a marbled effect or a new colour. Hand shape or roll and cut out your shapes with a sharp knife or craft knife to create clean edges.

Step 3

Add decorative bits or texture, think about what colours you pair together keeping in a similar tonal range for a subtle colour pallet or consider complimentary colours to create some contrast.

Create holes to allow your creations to be transformed in to jewellery – It is important when doing this step to consider how you intend to attach them to the earring hooks

Step 4

Bake it!

Place your finished earring motifs onto your lined baking tray and pop into an oven that is preheated at 120°C for 15 -25 minutes (this is really dependent on the thickness of the clay, for mine I did 15 minutes).

Leave to cool then apply a glaze with a paintbrush and allow to dry for at least half an hour, continue this process of applying the glaze until you have your desired effect.

Step 5

Attach your creations to earring hooks either directly onto the hooks or using joining rings – this is where a small set of pliers can come in handy.

Once assembled try them on and show off your beautiful new creations or wrap them up as a gift for a special someone!
