DIY Cat Cactus Planter

DIY Cat Cactus Planter

These cuties take your cactus game to a whole new level, make these sweet planters to zhuzh up your little cactus friends for your own abode or as sweet house warming gift for a pal! – cats and cacti is there really a better match?

What you will need:

  • Air Dry Clay
  • Plastic Bottles
  • Cling Wrap
  • Rolling Pin
  • Craft Knife
  • Modelling Tools
  • Acrylic Paints & Paint Brush
  • Glaze – I just used some left over Polymer glaze I had lying around
  • Cacti of your choice

Step 1

Clear your work space and cut the top off your plastic bottles to make them easier to work with.

Step 2

Begin rolling out your clay with a rolling pin – I used about 1/4 of the block for each planter.

Roll your clay into a circle approximately 5mm thick.

Step 3

Cover your bottle end with cling wrap, then place your sheet of clay on the bottom of your plastic bottle and begin shaping it around the bottle.

It looks a little rough at this stage but just keep moulding the clay around the bottle, smooth over any cracks with a small amount of water until the surface is nice and smooth. Be careful to make sure the clay is relatively even in thickness and that there are no thin areas or holes.

Step 4

Start moulding the top edge of your planter creating a clean edge and the ears, then using your modelling tools create some feline facial features.

Step 5

Leave to dry for a couple hours to allow the clay to firm up again, then remove the plastic bottle and cling warp and leave to air dry for a further 4 days.

Step 6

Paint it!

Once the clay has completely dried paint your planters and leave them to dry, once dry apply your glaze and leave to dry again.

Step 7

Pot your cacti!

A cactus is the best suited plant for these air dry clay planters as they don’t require heavy watering – too much water could react with the clay. If you are really concerned about water reacting with the clay you can cut down your plastic bottle and sit it inside your planter to pop your cacti in – I just popped the cacti in with its original container.

And now you have your very own cat cactus planter! These also make a purrfect gift for any cat or cactus lover alike.
